In the article “How to clean
up your Social Media for College Application” by Megan Shuffleton tells the
millennial generation that they need to clean up their social media site because many companies
are seeing social media as the true view of the student character. The article
tell the student that need to be very careful of what they post on the social
media site such as: Twitter, Tumbler, Vine, Insta-Gram and Foursquare to just
name a few site. The first step to cleaning up any social media site is to
check your privacy setting and also monitor who can see your wall, photos and
who can look at your information. By changing your privacy setting it put the
student in control of what their profile look likes to others. The article
states that “your profile should not have any picture with racial slur,
offensive language, inappropriate gesture or clothing and basically anything
else that you would not want your grandmother to see”. (Shuffleton) It also
states that a student should think before they tweet because you really do not
know who will be read those twits. The article was just letting the students
know that they need to be careful of what they post on the social media site
because they do not know who is reading those posts and that they might hurt
them in the long run.
I think this is an interesting article. When I first left for college facebook had only recently been introduced and social media was just beginning. I did not have to worry about things in my past showing up on social media sites to haunt me. Now almost anything you do can be captured on camera and posted online almost immediately it is scary! It is also scary how unsafe or unsmart so many people our when it comes to posting and using the internet. Good tips in the article!
ReplyDeleteHi Iris
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t agree with your statement more, “Take everything off social networking you wouldn’t want your grandma to see!” I teach computer applications at the middle school level and one of our units is on digital literacy. I really try to press the issue with what you should and shouldn’t have about yourself online. I bring up many heated discussions with students and share with them true stories about people getting fired for things they post or pictures of themselves online. It is extremely important that students understand once something is posted, it’s been archived people can save and reproduce copies of it. So even if you delete something later, it could still be out there haunting you. I think it’s very important for students to learn to keep a clean digital profile early in life.
