Week 7 Blog

In the article “Financing the Education of High-Need Students” by Chester E. Finn, Jr. talk about how special education is broken. He said the too many children that is in special-education system are graduating from school out any skill, knowledge and competencies that they need to have success is life. I will have to agree with Mr. Finn because my great nephew graduate a couple years ago and he was in special education class because he was a slow learner but when he graduated he could even count money and that is something that he should have learn in the elementary. I also think that the special education need a major make over because these student might be slow learn but it is the education system  responsible that these children get a good education.

The article “Schools Improve When Leader Stop Rationalizing Mediocrity” discussed the failing school district. Eric A. Hanushek and Paul E. Peterson stated that Program for International Student Assessment released the test score that show that student in other countries are progressing faster than student in the United States. Student in the United States are ranking 26th in math, 21st in science and in reading 17th place against other countries.  Hanushek and Peterson stated in their article that the American Association of School Administrator believes that problem is not that the school is falling behind but that the schools are pulling apart. It also stated that the United State will not explain why the schools  has the inability to teach our students the basic skill in science, reading and math while student in other countries are being equipped for the modern global economy. It is now time for the United State to start putting more money in the education of our student and they should also hold the school system more accountability for the each student getting a good education.

Week 6 blog

Chapter 6 “The Social Web” Richardson talk about that there are over I billion people now online because of the social media. Mostly everyone has a twitter account and is connect to some kind of social booking marking services. People twit about anything that they think that the public would want to read about. People have to be careful on what they twit about because we have some sick people in this world that will use those twits against them. I did sign up for a twitter account because of this class, and I have been getting twits from everyone that I sign up with. If you want to know anything about a person sign up to get connect to their twitter account. Because of the social media we are able to learn anything we want to know about a person.

Week 6

I read the article “Let’s say enough is enough to lousy school” by Geoffrey Canada he states that the educational prospect has not changed in 50 years. He made a good point when said that it is the parent responsibility when a child fail academically, but I feel that some of the responsibility also fail on the teacher. If a teacher has a child in their class that is failing then the teacher should notify that parent and they both should come up with a solution that will help that child to succeed in school. Canada also stated “Taking care of children so they can succeed in school and life should be the floor and not the ceiling of our expectations.” A lot of time the parent put the blame on the teacher but if we have failing school it is the community and the government responsibility to make sure that every child is able to get a good education so that they will be able to succeed in life. I feel like Canada we have spent a lot on money in Afghanistan so why can we spent that same amount money on education in the United States.

“Great Teacher Can Teacher more student, even without raising class sizes” by Bryan Hassel and Emily Ayscue Hassel suggest that school system shift to a new school model that would extend the reach of excellent teacher teaching wisely. This model would let teacher add new paraprofessional to their teaching team. The paraprofessional would do the teacher administrative paperwork and oversee the skill practice, any project work that the student need to complete, and digital instruction at school. This would leave the teacher to a one-teacher-one-classroom mode. The teacher would be able to spend more time with each student on this model. The article stated that teacher have achieved outstanding result with this model. Hassel believes that students learn better with this model and that teacher has more time to plan and collaborate within their teaching team. If this model can help the student give more one on one time from the teacher I am for this type of school because sometime some student just need a little more of the teacher time to be able to succeed in a class.

Week 5 Blog

Wikipedia
Before we started using Wikipedia there are 7 things that we should about the site.
1 What is it? It is a free online encyclopedia that anyone can post to
2. Whose doing it? Anyone can create and edit Wikipedia
3. How does it work? When you research a topic at google the first search result is usually Wikipedia.
4. Why is it significant? Because it the user in control of the material that they received, it let the students take part in the collaborative process of creating and revising the content of the material.
5. What are the downsides? The material that you read on Wikipedia might not be true material because people can post their opinion on that site.
6. Where is it going? Wikipedia is not going anywhere because you have to many people the use the information for that site.
7 What are the implication for teaching and learning? It gives student the opportunity to generated knowledge and it helps the student to be better researcher because whatever information that they find on the Wikipedia site has to be further researched.
Wikipedia is not a very reliable site for a student to use and most teachers will not let the student quote any information from Wikipedia because of that reason. Wikipedia can a start when you are researching but it cannot be the only research that is use in the process.

Wiki

Wiki
I really did not know what a wiki was until I started this Master in Education Technology. I found out that a wiki is nothing but a web page that you can design the way you want to and you can post whatever you want to on your page. I do see where wiki can be very useful in the classroom these days because all student now have access to a computer and the teacher can step up a wiki page just for their classroom so that the student can post their homework or class work to it.

How to clean up your Social Media for College Application

In the article “How to clean up your Social Media for College Application” by Megan Shuffleton tells the millennial generation that they need to clean  up their social media site because many companies are seeing social media as the true view of the student character. The article tell the student that need to be very careful of what they post on the social media site such as: Twitter, Tumbler, Vine, Insta-Gram and Foursquare to just name a few site. The first step to cleaning up any social media site is to check your privacy setting and also monitor who can see your wall, photos and who can look at your information. By changing your privacy setting it put the student in control of what their profile look likes to others. The article states that “your profile should not have any picture with racial slur, offensive language, inappropriate gesture or clothing and basically anything else that you would not want your grandmother to see”. (Shuffleton) It also states that a student should think before they tweet because you really do not know who will be read those twits. The article was just letting the students know that they need to be careful of what they post on the social media site because they do not know who is reading those posts and that they might hurt them in the long run.

Week 4 Blog

Chapter 5 “RSS: The new Killer App for Educators
I had never heard of a RSS feed or knew what it meant until I started this class. But I know now that RSS mean Really Simple Syndication and I can see now why it is called that because it was very easy to set up an RSS feed. Richardson talk about how RSS  is a technology that teachers should teach their student to use. I did find that the RSS application was very interesting once I figure out how to us it. I do see where the RSS feed does have a lot of helpful information that teacher could use in the classroom and there are a lot of article  that can help the teacher stay inform of what is happening in the education field. Because of the RSS feed you do not have visit other site to get information, now the information can come to you. The RSS feed make writing a research paper easy because it will bring the information to you. RSS feed is a good site for teacher to use because the information on the site if update often so the student will be able to the most recent information.

Chapter 8 Podcasting, Video and Screencasting and Live Streaming: Multimedia Publishing for the Masses
After reading the chapter on Podcast, I learn that podcast is when people talking about something that interest them and putting music to their thoughts. Podcasting in a easy way for people to voice their opinion. Once you subscribe to podcast it is similar to weblog because you can subscribe to other people podcast. I do not think that I will be a fan of podcasting for student without some kind of rules  an regulation put in place as to what they can podcast about, because if nothing is put in place the student will be able to talk about anything or anybody and that could become a problem for teacher. While read this chapter I discover that I have podcast app on my Iphone.

Gains in Teacher Quality

In the article “Gains in Teacher Quality” it ask several question at the quality of teaching. One question that the articles ask is has the academic caliber of new teacher change of the last two decade. The answer to the question came from the No Child Left behind Act when it “emphasized academic competence by requiring that prospective teachers either graduate with a major in the subject they are teaching, have credits equivalent to a major, or pass a qualifying test showing competence in the subject” (Goldhaber & Walch). The next question that the article asked is “Has the policy emphasis on teacher quality led more academically talented people into the teacher workforce, or have accountability reforms driven talent away?”  (Goldhaber & Walch) I would have to yes to this question because of the No child left behind Act  it  raised the  test-based accountability for teacher and the ongoing push to establish more-rigorous teacher evaluation systems have made teaching less attractive and thereby contributed to further decline in the quality of the teaching corps (Goldhaber & Walch). I think that education system need to go back to basic and let the teacher teach without all of the rule and regulate and form to fill out because it has taken teaching time away for the teacher.

Chapter 2 & 3 of Blogs, Wikis and Podcasts

In read chapter 2 of “Blogs,Wikis, Podcast, and other Powerful Web Tools for the classrooms” by Will Richardson he state that everyone is not a blogger and that two-third of people that have a blog will go for more than two month without posting anything on their blog and I do agree with him because I would probably be one of those two-thirds. But I do believe that setting up a blog page for the classroom is a go ideal because it can give the student a chance to voice their opinion on different subject, and it can create a learning environment outside of the classroom.
I wish that I would have read Chapter 3 before I set up my blog because I have learn a lot about blog and in the chapter it even show picture of how it should look. It walk a person through setting up a blog. In this chapter it discussed that   when you start your blog for the first time to start small. It also stated that Weblogs can be a learning experience not only for the teacher but also for the student. After read this chapter I feel a little more comfortable about post item on my blog.

Satellite

In the article “Teachers participate in the workshop at Harwell” it talks about the workshop that focused on how satellite can be us in the classroom. The teachers that attend receive hand on experience in the workshop. One experiment used an infrared thermometer to measure the ocean temperature from orbit. The teachers learn that with the use of satellite navigation device they can be able to tell how a person has waited for a bus. And that satellite can help to improve the safety of the land, air transportation and can also help to protect the environment. Emmanuel Ramos, Senior Advisor for the Directorate of Telecommunications & Integrated Applications, state that “Space is a most exciting topic and that by using space when teaching can help convince young people to pursue their studies in science and engineering, preparing the next generation of skilled labour for our society”. Because of this workshop on satellite it will help the teacher to be able to prepare their student for the future.

Creative Commons
Many people are using creative commons now instead of copyrights because with creative commons you have flexibility on who can use your work and what that can also use. Unlike copyright that last 70 years after a person death, Creative Common license work around the world and last as long as copyrighting. Creative commons also protect the person that is using another person work as long as we abide by the rule and regulations that the person has specified such as all right reserved by the owner. Creative commons is easy to use.

World Wide Web

In Chapter 1 of "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms" by Will Richard, I really learn a lot about the history of the internet. I never knew who started the World Wide Web and when it was started. I do remember that when I started college in the 80’s we work on Apple computer. Those computers were big and they were in a room where the temperature was control at a cool setting. We had to use the library to do any kind of research that need to be done.  Now since the World Wide Web people are able to do their research in the privacy of their home.
